Karachi's Boiling Point: Water and Power Crisis Sparks Outrage, Power Up Your Life, Power Down Your Bills with FORCE
There was a protest on University Road as Karachi residents took out a protest rally against unending water and electricity crises, particularly in the area of PIB Colony, where ARY News reported today.
The protesters blocked the two lanes leading to the Hassan Square near Newtown Police Station, which caused wide traffic congestion in the rest of the areas.
What has worsened the already bad situation is that near Old Sabzi Mandi, there is a break in the water line due to which the road had been flooded. Assurances by the Water Corporation that these issues would be sorted out, including damage caused to a main water line while doing construction work on the BRT project, are yet to materialize and have added to the frustrations of the residents. For the last four days, the city has been reeling under water shortages with areas like Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal reporting severe supply disruptions. The situation in these, as well as other neighborhoods such as Garden, Sadar, Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal Colony, Malir, and Gulistan-e-Johar, is still shortage-based.
The October 5 protest mimicked the earlier unrest; huge demonstrations against water and electricity outages caused great jams in Karachi. Thousands, including women and children from Jacob Lines, have obstructed the signal-free Corridor-III route along Saddar to Peoples Chowrangi to protest electricity connections allegedly because of 'usurious and unjustifiable bills by K-Electric'. Earlier, the October agitators lined up thousands of vehicles bumper-to-bumper for hours along the stretch of MA Jinnah Road, Shahrah-i-Quaideen, and connecting roads such as Preedy Street and Sharea Faisal.
Negotiations with police have not yielded any results so far and the residents vowed to carry on their protests until adequate water and electricity supply were forthcoming.
